How Long Can Steak Stay in the Freezer?

So, you just bought a delicious piece of steak but realize you can’t eat it before it goes bad so you toss it in the freezer.

How to Properly Freeze a Steak

The first step to properly freezing your steak is to ensure you wrap it tightly with no air bubbles. If you throw your butcher-wrapped steak into the freezer without wrapping it up tightly, your steak will experience freezer burn. The beauty of Pre Brand’s patented packaging is that it keeps our beef the freshest because it is sealed airtight. If you buy Pre steaks from a grocery store and don’t have the chance to eat them by their expiration date, do not worry! Toss it in the freezer. When you are ready to defrost, place the package in a bowl with cool water, and it will quickly defrost. Just remember, the trick to properly freezing your steak is to ensure you seal it airtight!

How Long Can Steak Stay in the Freezer?

You can keep a piece of steak in the freezer for 4-12 months. The amount of time you can keep steak in the freezer depends on the packaging. A vacuum-sealed, airtight steak like Pre Brands will last in the freezer significantly longer than butcher-wrapped steak. If you buy steak from the butcher counter and try and seal it yourself with saran wrap, it will likely suffer from freezer burn within a few months.

Does Freezing Steak Reduce the Quality?

If you freeze your steak correctly, the quality will remain the same. The actual temperature of your freezer may affect this. You would want your freezer to be at 0° F to preserve your frozen steak perfectly.

How to Defrost Steak

There are many different ways to defrost your steak, and they all depend on the amount of time that you have. You can move your steak from the freezer and into the fridge, which will defrost anywhere from 12 to 24 hours. A one-inch steak will take 12-14 hours to defrost in the refrigerator. But if you want to defrost your steak quickly, place it in a bowl with cold water, and it will be ready in about 30 minutes!

How Long is Defrosted Steak Safe to Eat?

Ensure you eat your defrosted steak three to five days after removing it from the freezer. Your steak will go bad if you let it sit in the fridge longer! The quality of the meat can change with refreezing. Oddly enough, there have been some studies that show refreezing can actually tenderize the steak more due to the formation of ice crystals breaking down muscle fibers. Overall, it is safe to refreeze if everything is stored properly.
