A cast iron skillet is a must-have for any serious cook, especially if you cook a lot of steak. The dense, heavy cast-iron creates a fantastic sear on meats, and develops a natural non-stick coating over time.
If your skillet already has good “seasoning,” you don’t need to re-season it. The best way to clean it is to throw in a cup of kosher salt. Then, scrub and scour the skillet with a kitchen towel to remove any pesky, stuck-on bits of food. Then, rinse the skillet with hot water, dry it off immediately, and apply a thin coating of oil to season the skillet.
Begin by removing the grill grates. Then, soak them in a bucket of warm, soapy water using dish soap. While they soak, wipe down the outside of your grill and examine it for any corrosion, damage, or other issues.
Next, scrape out the firebox with a putty knife to remove any stuck-on gunk and debris, and rinse out the inside of the grill with a garden hose. Take out the grill grates and scrub them with a wire brush, then rinse them out with the hose, then replace them and re-assemble your grill.
Spices never truly “expire,” but they definitely lose potency over time. Most ground spices last between 2-3 years, but begin losing flavor after just a year. Whole spices last longer, up to 5 years, but you should still check periodically to make sure they’re still good.
Take a look at your spice rack. Remove any spices that are old, caked up, or otherwise compromised, and check for duplicate spices. Organize your spices so the labels are easy to see, and you can easily access any spice while you cook.
Start by checking all of the “best by dates” on your fridge items and tossing anything that’s spoiled. Then, empty out the entire refrigerator.
Then, wipe the inside of the fridge with hot, soapy water, and then wipe it down with clean water to remove the soap.
To sanitize the inside, mix 1 tbsp of bleach with 1 gallon of water, then spray down the interior and wipe it down with clean water. Then, replace all removable components and put your food back into your sparkling clean fridge. It will feel fantastic every time you open the fridge door.
