Frequently Asked Questions

  • Pre® means “before.” Before the rise of industrial feedlots and intensive, unsustainable farming, when cattle roamed freely on open pastures and grazed the way nature intended. We honor those roots, raising animals humanely for beef that’s naturally nutrient-rich and full of flavor. Our pasture-based approach supports soil health, biodiversity, and regenerative land use, creating a more sustainable future that’s better for you, the animals, and the planet.

  • Pre® sources from select regions in Australia, New Zealand, and the United States that offer ideal environmental conditions (rainfall & variety of grasses) for year-round pasture grazing.

  • At Pre®, animal welfare is fundamental. Our cattle are raised outdoors on open pasture year-round, in environments that support the internationally recognized ‘Five Freedoms’ of animal welfare:
    •  Freedom from hunger and thirst

    • Freedom from discomfort

    • Freedom from pain, injury or disease

    • Freedom from fear and distress

    • Freedom to express normal behavior

We source from family-owned farms that practice rotational grazing, and we subject our suppliers to annual third-party audits to ensure compliance. When it comes time for processing, our cattle are handled humanely using methods developed by Temple Grandin, with captive-bolt stunning and no visual exposure to the act of slaughter. This is to guarantee that stress is minimized and welfare is maximized.

  • In Australia and New Zealand, no mRNA vaccines are approved for use in cattle or other livestock. Farmers instead use traditional vaccines—such as killed or modified-live types—that have safely protected herds for decades. Common vaccines include those for BVDV, IBR, BRSV, clostridial diseases, leptospirosis, Johne’s disease, and botulism. Additional vaccines target tick fever and Q fever in Australia, and salmonella, rotavirus, and Campylobacter fetus in New Zealand. Vaccination programs vary by farm and region, so producers work with veterinarians to determine the most appropriate plan for their herds.

  • Cooking times and methods vary by product and recipe, but we've got you covered. Click on a product for basic cooking instructions or check out our recipes.

  • For the best flavor and texture after thawing, we suggest using ground beef within about 6 months and steaks or roasts within a year.

  • All of our beef is verified non-GMO through rigorous third-party audits in Australia, New Zealand, and the United States, and Pre® is proud to be Project Non-GMO Verified.

  • If you see the Halal logo on our beef, it is Halal compliant.

Pre Brands sources halal-certified beef from New Zealand and Australia, which is harvested in accordance with halal standards. We import our beef with Halal certification and process it at our Halal‑certified facility, where all grinding and cutting are performed in accordance with the certification.

Our beef supply and our processor who cuts our steaks and grinds our ground beef is certified halal. Our brand is not yet certified, which is a documentation and processing procedure.

  • At Pre®, we believe antibiotics should be used responsibly and only when necessary for an animal’s health. If an animal becomes ill, a veterinarian administers treatment and the animal is temporarily separated from the herd. Once testing confirms the antibiotics are fully cleared from the animal’s system it is returned to the herd.

  • Absolutely not. While cattle, like all living beings, naturally produce hormones, at Pre®, we never use added hormones or growth promotants at any point in the raising process.

  • At Pre®, we’ve explored sourcing organic beef, and while we appreciate what the organic label stands for, we found that it doesn’t always guarantee the qualities we value most. In fact, organic certification largely reflects USDA labeling standards—meaning beef can still come from cattle fed organic corn or grain and never see open pasture. The regions we source from, however, naturally meet or exceed many of the same principles behind organic production. Our cattle are pasture-raised, grass-fed, and grass-finished year-round on nutrient-rich grasses—never confined, never given added hormones or unnecessary antibiotics, and always treated humanely. By focusing on where and how our beef is raised rather than chasing a label, we deliver a consistently delicious, nutrient-dense, and responsibly sourced product that’s truly better for you and better for the planet.

  • Yes, Pre® packaging is 100% BPA Free. Additionally, we do not use nitrate film to enhance meat color or any gasses to artificially extend shelf life.

  • Pre® packaging is designed with both food safety and environmental responsibility in mind. Our paperboard backing is fully recyclable through standard curbside programs, helping reduce overall waste. While the plastic portion of our packaging isn’t currently recyclable due to the materials needed to maintain freshness and prevent contamination, it is 100% BPA-free—meaning it’s free from harmful chemicals sometimes found in food packaging. We continue to explore new, more sustainable packaging solutions that protect the integrity, safety, and shelf life of our beef while minimizing environmental impact.

  • Pre® beef should be stored in the refrigerator until the "Use/Freeze By" date printed on the package. By this date the product should be consumed, or frozen to be thawed and eaten at a later date.

  • Pasture-raised refers primarily to how cattle are raised, not just what they eat. These animals are not confined and have the freedom to graze on open pasture. By definition, pasture-raised livestock must have continuous outdoor access for at least 120 days per year. At Pre®, cattle are raised outdoors on pasture year-round, allowing them to live naturally and graze freely for their entire lifespan.

  • Yes, Pre® beef is 100% gluten-free. Our beef contains no gluten, fillers, or additives, just pure, grass-fed and finished beef. Because it’s minimally processed and free from grains, our products are naturally safe for those with gluten sensitivities or celiac disease.

  • Yes! You can buy Pre® beef online. Our full selection of grass-fed and finished beef cuts is available through Instacart and other online grocery partners, depending on your location. To find delivery or pickup options near you, visit our Store Locator.
